Poker is a card game played by two to seven players. It can be played with one or more decks of 52 cards, with or without jokers or wild cards. The game starts with two cards dealt face down to each player. These are called hole cards. Five community cards are then revealed in stages, known as the flop, turn and river. The best 5-card poker hand wins the pot.
Once everyone has a look at their cards, it is time to start the betting round. The first person to act puts in a bet and any other players can call or raise the bet. If you aren’t happy with your cards you can choose to draw replacements, but this isn’t a normal part of the game.
It is important to be clear when stating your intentions for betting. For example, it is against the rules to hide your cards in your lap or suck them in when betting. This can confuse other players and cause misunderstandings. Also, remember to leave your cards on the table and in sight at all times. This way you can be easily spotted by the dealer and others playing in the same game. It also helps the dealer keep track of the stakes being made.
